Getting competition ready!
In what can be a fun, yet stressful, time of the Physie year, it's important to be prepared early with everything you will need come competition time.
Here at Erskine Park Physie, we've compiled a list of the essentials, and some healthy snack ideas to consider for the coming weekends:
What to pack
Your ballets - we don't advise wearing them to the venue, so don't forget to pop them in your Physie bag. It's a handy idea to write your name on the inside also.
A spare pair of shimmers - if you have an extra pair available, it's a good idea to throw them in your bag just in case. Your teachers are also super prepared with extras in case of mishaps on the day.
Club apparel - if you own some club apparel, this is a fabulous time to wear it! Club gear shows pride in your club and allows you to be quickly identified by your teacher and team mates.
Bobby pins and hairspray - you can never have too much of either of these items. Especially for girls and ladies competing in both their teams and heats competitions in one day (you might need to affix a stray hair here and there!)
Water - natures hydration source! Water sits best when you're exercising, and when you're nervous! Leave sugary drinks at home and make sure you've packed a few water bottles instead.
Tissues - whether they be sad or happy tears, they are bound to rear their head at comp time!
Medication - if you need to take medication, or use an asthma reliever puffer, don't forget to include them when packing your Physie bag. Remember, for children any medication must be administered by a parent.
Your tickets - your wallet is a good place for these. You'll be surprised how many people leave them on the kitchen counter!
Something to do - for younger girls, we don't recommend bringing expensive electronics to Physie comps (such as iPods and iPads). A colouring book and pencils, novel, or notebook and pen, are all great time fillers. Even better, your Physie friends are always up for a chat and a good time. Maybe think of a fun game to play with your teammates and new Physie pals!
Some healthy snacks - greasy food doesn't sit well in the belly on comp day, and careful not to pack food that will make a mess of a little girls leotard. See below for some of our competition snack ideas.
Wipes or napkins - for messy hands after snack time.
For older girls and ladies - we recommend packing the following: deodorant, a sweat towel, makeup for touch ups, Hollywood tape, strapping tape, bandaids, feminine products, spare safety pins - and rescue remedy!
Competition Friendly Snacks
Anything that is healthy, non-greasy and provides minimal mess is best. This sounds like an impossible combination, so we've compiled a list of our favourites for you:
A light sandwich - ham and lettuce is a favourite with our teachers!
A banana - high in potassium which can help prevent muscle cramps
Carrot sticks
Cereal or muesli bars
Light cheese and crackers
Grapes
Our teachers aren't nutritionists, but we have over 50 years Physie experience between us to have trialled what works and what doesn't!
